GSD celebrates World Humanitarian Day by Siofra Sharpe
Celebrated every year on August 19th, World Humanitarian Day is dedicated to honoring humanitarian efforts worldwide and propagating the idea of supporting people in crisis.
Marking international days is not a new thing and predates the establishment of the United Nations. They are a powerful advocacy tool and this year, the aim is to honor and celebrate the work of women and their undying contribution in making the world a better place.
They, and indeed all humanitarians, need not only be celebrated but also to be guaranteed the protection afforded to them under International Law.
Today is, therefore, a great day to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, celebrate, and reinforce the achievements of humanity.
Which achievements would you like to celebrate today? And which unsung heroes would you like to see ‘sung’? #womenhumanitarians
