“Broken – A Palestinian Journey Through International Law”
Understanding how international law works, and particularly how it could be implemented is a feat. “Broken: A Palestinian Journey Through International Law” is a 2018 documentary that navigates this complex subject well, showing how the film could prove an effective medium to explain the challenges of implementing international law in the context of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The film focuses on the landmark decision made by the International Court of Justice 16 years ago that was about to change history. It declared Israel’s construction of a 700km-long wall within occupied Palestine territory illegal. International support for the decision was widespread, but up to now, nothing has changed. The wall keeps being built, and most states have not followed up on their obligation to stop it or follow up on the Court’s decision. The title “Broken” refers to this broken promise.
I had the pleasure of speaking to Prof. Alfred De Zayas, my former professor at the Geneva School of Diplomacy, and a renowned human rights and international law expert. He reflects on the educational value of the film and its potential among a broad range of audiences. We also discussed the film’s depiction of the historic proceedings, and his take on the events of 2004.
