Two distinguished members of the Geneva School of Diplomacy community contributed their expertise to a high-level panel held in Bern marking ten years since the attempted coup in Türkiye on 15 July 2016.
The event, “National Will and Democratic Resistance: July 15 in its 10th Year,” was organised by the Republic of Türkiye Directorate of Communications and the Embassy of Türkiye in Bern. It brought together diplomatic, academic and media perspectives on democratic resilience and Türkiye’s evolving international role.
Ambassador Jean-Daniel Ruch, GSD Faculty and Advisory Council Member and former Swiss Ambassador to Türkiye, contributed his extensive experience as a diplomat and international relations expert. Drawing on his first-hand knowledge of the country and the region, he reflected on Türkiye’s strategic importance, its relationship with Europe and its growing influence in international affairs.
He was joined by Catherine Fiankan-Bokonga, Member of the GSD Advisory Council, internationally respected journalist and senior correspondent accredited to the United Nations in Geneva. Drawing on decades of experience covering international affairs and Geneva’s multilateral institutions, she examined the evolution of Türkiye’s role within the multilateral system and on the global stage.
Catherine highlighted the increasingly significant position Türkiye has assumed over the past decade, as well as its expanding diplomatic influence and growing relevance in addressing regional and international challenges.
Their participation reflects the exceptional level of diplomatic, journalistic and international expertise represented within the GSD community. The School is privileged to count Ambassador Ruch and Catherine Fiankan-Bokonga among its Advisory Council Members, with Ambassador Ruch also contributing directly to the education of GSD students as a member of its faculty.
Their insight and continued engagement in international affairs enrich the academic environment at GSD and connect its students with respected voices actively contributing to global diplomacy and multilateral debate.
