Book Discussion: Killing Democracy: Western Imperialism’s Legacy of Regime Change and Media Manipulation

The Geneva School of Diplomacy welcomed award-winning journalist and author Finian Cunningham for a thought-provoking book discussion exploring democracy, interventionism, media narratives, and geopolitical power in contemporary international affairs.

As debates surrounding democracy, sovereignty, foreign intervention, and media influence continue to shape international political discourse, critical examination of these themes remains essential for understanding today’s geopolitical landscape.

As part of the Geneva School of Diplomacy’s Emerging Issues & Persistent Challenges series, the Geneva School of Diplomacy hosted Finian Cunningham for a book discussion centred on his work Killing Democracy: Western Imperialism’s Legacy of Regime Change and Media Manipulation.

Drawing on his experience as an international journalist and political commentator, Cunningham explored key themes from his publication, including interventionism, regime change, information narratives, media influence, and the broader relationship between power, international politics, and public discourse.

The session offered students, faculty, and attendees an opportunity to engage in critical discussion around contemporary geopolitical narratives and the role of media in shaping international understanding.
