Project Zanzibar
Supporting sustainable access to clean water and community development initiatives in Zanzibar through long-term humanitarian partnership.
The Geneva School of Diplomacy has proudly supported Project Zanzibar through its partnership with the Zanzibar Outreach Program (ZOP), a respected non-governmental organisation founded in 2006 and dedicated to improving access to healthcare, clean water, and education across the islands.
Through private local donations and collaborations with partner organisations in Tanzania and internationally, ZOP has developed a strong and lasting impact within local communities. GSD has specifically supported the ZOP Community Water Supply Program, which focuses on delivering sustainable access to safe and reliable clean water in underserved areas.
Many remote communities in Zanzibar continue to face limited access to clean drinking water, often relying on unsafe sources such as unprotected boreholes or rivers. This lack of infrastructure exposes communities to serious waterborne diseases including cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhoeal illness, and bilharzia.
By supporting community water supply initiatives, this project contributes directly to improving public health outcomes and strengthening community resilience.
In 2017, GSD student Viktoriia Sawitska became the first student from the institution to visit Zanzibar as part of this initiative, paving the way for future student engagement and reinforcing GSD’s commitment to meaningful humanitarian action beyond the classroom.
