GSD celebrates the historic peace signing of Mozambique

Thursday 1 August 2019, the Geneva School of Diplomacy, had not one, but two reasons to celebrate: this day was not only Swiss National Day, but it also marked, this year, the signing of a historic peace agreement in Mozambique. After decades of conflict, Filipe Nyusi, President of the Republic of Mozambique [and GSD alumnus] signed a peace accord with Ossufo Momade, leader of the armed opposition and rebellious Renamo. In 2018, President Nyusi was conferred, on the GSD Penthes campus, with the degree Doctor of International Relations [DIR], honoris causa — for his unflagging efforts to reach a peace agreement with Renamo. The Geneva School of Diplomacy had also placed at the service of his Excellency President Nyusi the mediation skills for which GSD is renowned. In 2018, GSD President Dr. Colum Murphy traveled to Mozambique for talks with President Nyusi. Mediation and peace were discussed — as was also a collaboration between the Government of Mozambique and the GSD Center of Blue Diplomacy: Mozambique’s magnificent coastline is not only the source of tragic storms but is a source of great natural wealth and future well-being for all the hospitable people of Mozambique. The bonfires of peace and national unity burned yesterday in more than one country — and GSD is understandably well pleased.
